What Does a Power Shop Technician Do?
As a Cat power systems technician with Peterson Cat, you will work in our fully equipped power shop servicing Cat engines, power generation equipment, and related accessories:
- Preparation, setup, installation, and startup of marine generators, engines, and related machinery and equipment manufactured by Caterpillar, a widely recognized industry leader.
- Repairing, rebuilding, or replacing marine, industrial, and EPG engines and additional components from Caterpillar and other top brands.
- Servicing Level 1 and Level 2 generator systems.
- Performing equipment inspections as needed.
- Supporting the efforts of electric power technicians in the field as needed.
What Does It Take to Be a Peterson Cat Equipment Repair Technician?
To qualify for the power shop technician role at Peterson Cat, you should have an associate degree in diesel technology or a closely related field of study from an accredited academic or technical/vocational institution. Successful applicants also have at least five years of engine service or power generation work experience. We will also consider an equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Power Field Technician

Peterson Cat, a leading provider of power systems and related accessories in the Western U.S., is looking to hire an experienced, well-qualified power generation specialist throughout California, Oregon, and southwest Washington.
The Role of a Power Field Technician
As a field technician with Peterson Cat, you will travel to our customers' facilities, jobsites, or other remote locations to repair power generation equipment and marine engines. Unlike an in-house shop position, this role requires extensive travel in an appropriately equipped company vehicle to respond to the customers' needs.
Examples of the many field technician responsibilities include:
- Installation and startup of Cat® generators and engines
- Repairing, rebuilding, and replacing engines and related system components in Cat and non-Cat equipment for EPG, industrial, and marine applications.
- Conducting Level 1 and Level 2 electrical service in accordance with National Fire Protection Association 110 standards.
- Assisting other field technicians as needed.
Power Generation Technician Qualifications
We expect the best from our equipment technicians to ensure we meet our customers' expectations. Our hiring criteria for this vital role include an associate degree in diesel technology or a similar field of study from a vocational school or an accredited university or college. We also require at least five years of relevant work experience. An equivalent combination of education and on-the-job experience is acceptable.

The Role of the Mobile Earthmoving Technician
As an on-site heavy equipment repair technician, you will travel to our customers' jobsites, facilities, or other remote locations to service equipment like bulldozers, excavators, skid steer loaders, motor graders, and backhoe loaders. While most of the work will involve Cat® equipment, you may also repair earthmoving products from other top manufacturers.
Examples of the daily job functions:
Analyze and diagnose equipment issues and determine the appropriate service procedure.
Write service reports to accurately list the diagnosis and the recommended services.
Repair, rebuild, and replace equipment engines, transmissions, brakes, hydraulic systems, and other vital components.
Adhere to the manufacturer's guidelines to ensure quality work.
Perform all assigned tasks in a timely and efficient manner.
About Field Technician Qualifications
We consider candidates for the earthmoving equipment field service position who have at least five years of relevant experience working with machine diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repairs, particularly with Cat products. We also prefer an associate degree in diesel technology or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and on-the-job experience can fulfill these requirements.
